A quick look at what’s happening with FIFA

Amidst the current investigation into FIFA, president Sepp Blatter has resigned a few days after being re-elected.
For those that don’t know, 14 FIFA officials were accused of racketeering and money laundering, meaning they accepted bribes and kickbacks. The US justice department estimates they made over $150 million over a 24-year period.

My main question would just be how they could have managed to do this and get away with it for so long. Like, wouldn’t it be noticeable how much extra money they made? Blatter also said that many reforms would be needed in order to fix the many issues in the organization. Blatter himself is under investigation and officials hope some of the accused will rat him out to escape their own charges. David Beckham said in a statement with US Today that

“Some things that we now know happened were despicable, unacceptable and awful for the game we love so much. Whilst it has not been good to read some of the headlines surrounding our sport recently, I hope at least we are now moving in the right direction. Football is not owned by a few individuals at the top, it belongs to the millions of people around the world who love this sport. It is time for FIFA to change and we should all welcome it.”

Those words could not be truer. Many hope this will bring about the changes FIFA needs to stay ahead and well…..others….
